Product Design Style Guide
23andMe
The 23andMe style guide was a collaborative endeavor that enabled our various feature teams to speak with a single voice. I initiated and led the process, which defined encompassed macro to micro design. I organized and finalized a large portion of the style guide. Below are some examples of the detail.
Visual Design Guideline
HP
I led the development of a graphical design language for LaserJet toner cartridges. The cartridges come in over 50 styles; many are over 5 years old. As HP grew, it's brand changed. The toner cartridge labels need updating. Below are some examples of the starting point.
I created the archetype for a large set of cartridges and that style was carried through the rest of the product line. My design is scalable to various product sizes and manufacturable through all production methods (printed labels, laser etching, or molded).
The following are some of the design challenges I faced:
- Many generations of style and design were in production
- Various sizes for labelling area
- High executive priority, but low priority and support from operations
- Various production timelines that
- Zero budget
After a long review process, we landed at a our future labeling system. Below are some sample pages:
Industrial Design Language
HP
While I was an industrial designer on HP LaserJet printers, I collaborated in the development of a hardware design language that would have to last for 7 years. Below are samples of the guide that was created for my products. This guide helped communicate the design strategy to marketing, engineers, and manufacturers. Each design detail is illustrated through form and detail.
I also supported the creation of the celebration book to help communicate the industrial design story.
